Young Soloist Competition 2016

The Winchester Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition was created to provide an opportunity for young musicians to experience performing with a full-size symphony orchestra and to develop their musicianship, while competing for a trophy and small prizes. The competition first took place in 2014. That year, a highly talented set of youngsters applied, and three were selected for the final, performing the Nielsen Flute Concerto, the Elgar Cello Concerto and the Bruch Violin Concerto. The competition will run again in 2016, this time as part of the Winchester Festival of the Arts. It will follow a similar format, as detailed below:

All competent and aspiring young instrumentalists attending secondary schools in Hampshire and who are resident in the UK are invited to compete for the title of:


First Round: Sunday 7th February 2016

Entrants are required to play one movement from a concerto of their choice in the First Round. All performers should be accompanied on the piano. An accompanist will be available if needed.

Three finalists will be chosen for the Final Round.

Final: Sunday 3rd July 2016

Each finalist will be required to play a complete concerto, which may be the same as the First Round or a different one by agreement with the orchestra.

Before the final, each performer will be invited to a two-hour rehearsal with the orchestra on a Monday in June and to a full run through on the afternoon of the concert

The Final will be held in New Hall, Winchester College, Winchester, accompanied by the Winchester Symphony Orchestra, as part of the Winchester Festival 2016.

Members of HCYO should note that there is a clash with an afternoon concert on 3rd July. Mr. Clausen encourages any member of HCYO to who wishes to enter for the First Round and if they are chosen for the final they should discuss it with him immediately.
