E-mail Print PDF

The Winchester Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition was created to provide an opportunity for young musicians to experience performing with a full-size symphony orchestra and to develop their musicianship, while competing for a trophy and small prizes. The competition first took place in 2014, and again in 2016.

The competition will run again in 2018. It will follow a similar format, as detailed below:

All competent and aspiring young instrumentalists attending secondary schools in Hampshire and who are resident in the UK are invited to compete for the title of:

WSO YOUNG SOLOIST 2018

First Round: Sunday 28th January 2018

Entrants are required to play one movement from a concerto of their choice in the First Round. All performers should be accompanied on the piano. An accompanist will be available if needed.

Three finalists will be chosen for the Final Round.

Final: Thursday 5th July 2018

Each finalist will be required to play a complete concerto, which may be the same as the First Round or a different one by agreement with the orchestra.

Before the final, each performer will be invited to a two-hour rehearsal with the orchestra on a Monday in June and to a full run through on Monday 2nd July.

The Final will be held in Romsey Abbey, accompanied by the Winchester Symphony Orchestra.
